P90X Day 11: Yoga X (Wasted Days)

CAUTION: Today's blog entry is very honest, and I seriously considered deleting it and starting over, but I think it's an important entry so that when I (or anyone else) looks back, they can see what happens when you overcome an obstacle.  However, this is not an inspirational video, so proceed with caution, LOL.
========================================

Today is Day 11 of P90X, which means Yoga X.  When you watch today's video, admittedly you will see and hear an intense frustration.  I seriously considered reshooting that video after some time had passed so that a cooler headed Brian would be on the video, but that honesty is important so that I can look back in the future and see how I overcame it.

The bottom line is I really dislike everything about yoga and I don't know why.  I am going to spend some time over the next week trying to literally write down why I dislike it so much because I really need to get down to the bottom of it.  Until I can figure it out I am considering switching the Yoga X with Cardio X, or perhaps even some TaeKwonDo forms practice.

As rotten as my attitude is in this video, and as embarrassing as my demeanor is in it, here's today's video:

  1. Hey brother. Good talk to day. I know we will get this thing worked out. I am part of a team of very knowledgeable people. Together a solution will be found. Keep up with the posts.

  2. Thanks, and I really am going to find a solution. If it were as simple as me just pushing through and doing it, then I would. That would be the best solution. However, right now that's not a possibility, so I either have to figure out how to get over myself and do the yoga, or find a suitable replacement exercise...and I have a week to figure it out.

  3. The reason you don't like it is because you have to be patient and forcing yourself to do something you are not good at and that is VERY uncomfortable. As much as you says it's not because your bad it, that's a lot to do with it. I've been in the same boat before. I can relate to you with martial arts since I done them for over 6 years of my life. With you being a 3rd degree black belt in anything, I know you know about clearing the mind and focusing on the task at hand. Breathe work and all that good stuff. Lots of men hate it though since we're not as flexible as others. You were transparent so I will be as well. You completely has the wrong attitude about it and attitude is everything in life. If you say "Well I guess I wasted a workout for the day" then that's exactly what you did. But if you say "Hey I done my best. Tomorrow is a new day. I'm moving forward in my fitness. I challenged myself today." then that's an awesome thing. These programs from beachbody transform your mind as much as it does your body. It's very mental. With you being a 3rd degree black belt, I know you have what it takes to get over this workout. Are you going to let a 90 minute workout defeat you? Make it halfway and the rest is easy. I don't like to do it sometimes, but I do it anyway. You have to learn to find the "relaxation in the exercise and movement" and once you do you will feel a lot better about it I promise you. I used to SUCK at yoga and now I'm pretty good at it and it has come to be one of my favorite workouts and choice workouts. Good Luck dude! Let's do this!

  4. Leland, thank you for your response. I agree that I need to improve my attitude regarding my approach to today's workout. That is a great point and one that I will take to heart.

    Your statement about me not liking yoga because I'm not good at it is somewhat invalidated in this debate because there is a precedent of me being quite good at somethings I dislike. Just one example of that is sparring. I thoroughly dislike sparring, but am very good at it, as is evidenced by my regional, national, and international tournament results, several of which are gold medals.

    I am really good at board breaking, having just won the gold medal at the most recent regional tournament. However, I hate board breaking. Another example of me being excellent at an activity that I do not like.

    Not only am I good at yoga, but I am certified to teach it through my martial arts organization. I just don't like it.

    I am not trying to set up an argument, but rather to find a solution. When looking for solutions, one must discover the problem first, and in this case, the problem is not my skill level in yoga.

  5. I have to agree with Leland above...with that being said, I don't know the whole story but do know a great deal of men ... and women... who feel the same as you.... some things we don't like are very good for us.... take food for an example although a little off topic. We may not "like" some foods but we eat them because we know how they can benefit us. Like Leland has said above... even though it is clear you do not "like" yoga... because you are certified to teach it, you DO know the benefits to your body....instead of fighting your dislike for it, try embracing it and actually changing your mind set about it. It was Abraham Lincoln who once proclaimed to his wife after meeting with a Senator he did not like, "I do not like that man......I should get to know him better."

  6. As I said, I am going to try to push through it. I value the comments that are made here, so thank you all for caring enough to pitch in. If anyone has any alternative suggestions for Yoga X (a replacement perhaps), that would be helpful because simply telling me to just keep doing it may not always be an option. I appreciate the sentiment, but I also need some solutions, and it's not always possible just to suck it up and do it anyway.
